Amodei welcomes Reno High to ÔWe the People'

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Mark Amodei (NV-2) this week met with 25 Reno High School students, along with their teachers Brien Karlin and Richard Clark, who are representing the Silver State in the 26th Annual We the People National Finals. The competition, held April 26 through 29, in hearing rooms on Capitol Hill and on the campus of George Mason University, brings students from across the country to Washington, D.C.

“The Huskies have taken Washington, D.C.” said Amodei. “These students could teach Congress a thing or two about the Constitution and I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a future Member of Congress or two in this group. Nevada is well-represented.”

The We the People National Finals take the form of simulated congressional hearings. During the hearings, groups of students testify as constitutional experts before panels of judges acting as congressional committees. Each hearing begins with opening statements by the students followed by questioning periods where judges test the students' knowledge, understanding, and ability to apply constitutional principles.

While in Washington, D.C., students have the opportunity to explore the nation's capital, learn about government beyond the classroom, and meet with elected officials. Since 1987, more than 30 million students and 90,000 teachers have participated in the We the People program.
