WASHINGTON, D.C. --Congressman Mark Amodei (NV-2) today voted in favor of the "Path to Prosperity" FY2013 budget resolution, which passed 228 to 191. He released the following statement.
Congressman Amodei:
Our national debt is more than $15.5 trillion. We are officially 'underwater' as a country, owing more money than our entire economy is worth. And Washington, D.C. has shown, regardless of which party is in power, if you send your money here, it will be spent.
Your money will be spent on crony capitalism projects where the government picks winners and losers. It will be spent to bailout political power bases. And it will be spent to kill jobs by blocking environmentally-responsible energy projects like the Keystone XL Pipeline.
Who profits from all this spending? According to a recent survey, 10 of the 15 wealthiest counties in America are in the D.C. metro area. With record unemployment in Nevada and elsewhere, it's obvious the rest of the country doesn't enjoy the same benefits.
The usual way of doing things around here is not the solution. It is the problem. I voted yes on the 'Path to Prosperity' budget resolution because it would:
Inject some basic fiscal sanity by beginning to cut spending, to which the President is still opposed.
Protect middle class families and small businesses during a recession by preventing the President's proposed $1.9 trillion tax increase.
Simplify the tax code by closing corporate loopholes and making American companies more competitive.
Protect Medicare without changes for current seniors and those eligible in the next decade, while ensuring the solvency of the program for our kids and grandkids by providing a choice between the traditional program and competitive options.
Defund ObamaCare and prevent its $500 billion cuts to Medicare and TRICARE.
Reverse the President’s anti-energy policies that drive up gas prices, and instead promote all forms of American energy production to increase supplies, lower costs, and create jobs.
Roll back the disastrous Dodd-Frank regulations, which have frozen the credit markets, hindering economic growth.
Avoid the automatic cuts to defense scheduled for the end of this year by identifying savings while funding it at levels to keep our country safe and to provide for our service men and women.
Most importantly, I voted for this budget because it would take power away from Washington, D.C. and return it to the American people, who I believe are better managers of their own money and health than politicians and unelected bureaucrats.
