Amodei Statement on House Speaker's Race

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Mark Amodei (NV-02) released the following statement on the race for House speaker.
“Following Kevin McCarthy’s removal as speaker and his announcement that he will not run again, the House is tasked with electing a new speaker. The Republican Conference is scheduled to hold a candidate forum next Tuesday, where potential candidates will have the opportunity to present their vision and qualifications for the role of speaker, followed by an election to determine who our nominee will be. Once both parties have designated their nominees, the House will vote to elect a new speaker.
“The next week will be full of jostling between candidates and speculation on who will be able to receive the 218 votes necessary to be elected speaker. For those interested in who I will choose to support, my decision will be informed by the discussions I have in the coming days. I urge any candidate for speaker looking for my support to commit to delivering results for Nevada, including ensuring all Nevada lands bills are made a priority and advanced to the floor.
“I’d also be interested to know about candidates’ willingness to change the motion to vacate rule to require a larger consensus before it can be brought to the House floor for a vote, because the current rule – which allows a single person to blow up regular order and bring up a motion to vacate the speaker – is untenable. If something doesn’t change, we’ll be spinning the wheels here for the next 15 months every time someone decides they disagree with the speaker or need to juice their fundraising numbers.
“I look forward to supporting a speaker who will provide aggressive oversight of the executive branch and get us back to the work of governing.”
