Amodei Report: Week in Review

February 26, 2016
E-Newsletter

Dear Friend,

This week, President Obama outlined his plan to close Guantanamo Bay. Not only is the President’s proposal dangerous, but it’s also against the law. The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) of 2016 explicitly prohibits the transfer of Guantanamo Bay detainees to American soil. Additionally, the President is required by law to provide critical details, such as the exact cost and location of an alternate detention facility – which he failed to do.

Since most of the detainees being held at Guantanamo Bay are dangerous and designated suspected terrorists, under no circumstances should they be transferred to the United States. The President’s incomplete proposal is irresponsible and just another attempt to fulfill a campaign pledge and distract from his foreign policy failures.

The House has an obligation to protect the security of our nation, and I will not support any plan that puts Americans in harm’s way.

Washington Visitors:

Disabled American Veterans Association

I had a productive meeting this week with Katherine Baran and Caleb Harris from the Disabled American Veterans organization. We discussed the upcoming budget and its impact on veterans in Nevada and across the country. Identifying the needs of our veterans and how Congress can best serve them will always be among my highest priorities.

Cadet Youth Program

The Nevada Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet Youth program is an opportunity for young people to learn about aviation as they prepare to serve their country. Cadets receive leadership training, aerospace education, physical fitness training and moral leadership development. I had the opportunity to visit with members of the Cadet program this week during their trip to Washington. I always enjoy visiting with such bright and motivated young students. Thanks for stopping by!

Committee Work:

This week, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Interior, Environment and Related Agencies held a hearing on the U.S. Forest Service’s budget for 2017. I specifically questioned the U.S. Forest Service Chief, Tom Tidwell, on wildfire operations and fire suppression. Click here to watch the full Committee hearing and learn more.

Washington Wrap-Up:

Taking Action to Protect Federal Prison Workers

This week, with my support, the House passed H.R. 472, the Eric Williams Correctional Officer Protection Act. This bill was introduced in honor of Eric Williams, a Federal Corrections worker who was brutally murdered by an inmate in 2013. These hardworking men and women put their lives on the line each day to keep our communities safe, and it’s imperative we provide them with the tools they need to feel safe in their own workplace. By allowing workers to carry pepper spray on duty, this bill I cosponsored will ensure workers are able to protect themselves in dangerous situations.

Opportunities for Students:

I’m currently seeking highly motivated college students to intern in my Washington office for the Summer 2016 session, which includes May – August. Candidates should possess an interest in the legislative process, strong communication skills and attention to detail. Responsibilities include: answering phones, leading tours of the U.S. Capitol, attending committee hearings and performing various other tasks based on skills and interests. A qualified applicant will possess excellent oral and written communications skills and a willingness to work on a variety of tasks. Nevada ties strongly preferred. Interested candidates should send their cover letter and resume to: nv.internship@gmail.com. REMINDER: the application deadline for the Summer 2016 session is MARCH 11. Visit: amodei.house.gov/internships for additional information.

New Rural Representative in Elko

I’m pleased to welcome Martin Paris, the new Rural Representative in my Elko office, to Team Amodei. Martin’s experience will bring great value to Nevada. Learn more here.

Remembering State Senator Debbie Smith

Finally, I would like to take a moment to honor my dear friend, Senator Debbie Smith, who tragically passed away this week. Debbie was a valued colleague and a dedicated public servant. Her unwavering devotion to Nevada will be greatly missed. Read my full statement here.
