Amodei Report: Washington Wrap-Up, HEROES Act 2.0

Dear Friend,

After weeks of refusing to pass a meaningful relief bill and blocking the extension of funding for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), this week, the Speaker decided to recycle her same wish list from May to bring HEROES 2.0 to the Floor for a vote. HEROES 2.0 costs approximately $2.2 trillion and still does not stand a chance of being signed into law, nor does it accomplish anything in terms of getting the jobless back to work or mitigating any of our current economic and healthcare challenges.

Here’s what HEROES 2.0 does:

  • Defunds the police by removing $600 million from the original HEROES Act intended for the COPS Hiring program and state and local law enforcement assistance;
  • Spends billions to ensure unemployment continues, by paying individuals more to stay out of work, which forces businesses to compete with unemployment benefits through Spring of 2021;
  • Incentivizes illegal immigration by allowing illegal immigrants to receive direct stimulus payments because the bill does not require social security number verification;
  • Federalizes elections, with less than five weeks to election day, by including stringent, impossible-to-achieve mandates on how states must run elections, including early voting, no ID requirement for in-person voting, same-day registration, and no excuse vote by mail without safeguards or restrictions on ballot harvesting;
  • Provides a tax break for millionaires and billionaires by repealing SALT limitations for 2020; and
  • Prevents the government from sharing information with families about lower cost health insurance options like association health plans or short-term limited duration plans at a critical time when American families need to know what their options are.

At the end of the day, I have a responsibility to vote in the best interests of the people of CD-2. I voted against this legislation, because we should be focused on getting America back on track. This is why I support the bipartisan House Problem Solvers Caucus’s $1.5 trillion coronavirus framework to provide relief and break a stalemate between House Democrats, the White House, and the Senate. Our package provides money for testing, small businesses, state and local governments, lawsuit liability protections, election support, and unemployment assistance.

HEROES 2.0 is just a further illustration of the Speaker’s political obsession with using this pandemic as an excuse to message on her Conference’s most radical priorities instead of focusing on the country’s best interests.

In other news, many Americans were underwhelmed with the first presidential debate this week. Me too. Unfortunately, there is no indication that the Speaker has any intention of deviating from the political bludgeoning of opponents to demonstrate anything resembling leadership.

It’s a good thing our republic is strong. It must be to endure the present sad display.
