Amodei Report: Washington Edition

Dear Friend,

This week, the House took action to pass H.R. 2733, the Nevada Native Nations Land Act, a bill I introduced that will transfer more than 70,000 acres of Nevada public lands back into local control – empowering those who are best suited to make decisions surrounding economic development.

By carefully balancing the unique needs of our Nevada tribal nations with those of local ranchers, land owners, public lands recreationalists and businesses, this bill will allow Nevadans to chart brighter futures for their communities while preserving their cultural heritage and traditions. I urge the Senate to take up this common-sense measure as soon as possible.

Washington Visitors

College of Southern Nevada

I recently had a great visit with students from the College of Southern Nevada who were in Washington for the Library of Congress’ screening of their documentary entitled, “No Greater Odds”. We discussed the specific education issues highlighted in their documentary and the importance of learning key job skills and earning a college degree. Thanks for stopping by.

United States Air Force Academy Students

Congratulations to C1C John Massey and C1C Kelly Lujan of the United States Air Force Academy for recently receiving their class rings. I appointed both Kelly and John to the USAFA and each of them will serve as Commanders of their respective squadrons for the Fall Academy Semester of their senior year. I commend John and Kelly for their hard work and dedication to our nation. Please do not hesitate to reach out to my Reno office for questions about the Academy nomination process.

Committee Work

Appropriations Committee Advances Pro-Growth Funding Bill

The House Appropriations Committee approved the fiscal year 2017 Financial Services and General Government Appropriations Bill this week, legislation that will rein in wasteful spending and hold federal agencies accountable. By providing essential funding to programs we need to grow our economy and enforce our laws, this bill will help to better serve American taxpayers.

Washington Wrap-Up

House Votes to Protect American Taxpayers

With my support this week, the House took action to pass H.R. 5278, the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA), a bill to protect American taxpayers from a bailout by forcing Puerto Rico to implement common-sense, conservative reforms to their economic model. Hardworking taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for the Puerto Rican government’s irresponsible behavior – and this bill ensures they won’t have to.

Taking Action to End the Vicious Federal Spending Cycle

As Vice Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on the Legislative Branch, I take the responsibility of being a good steward of taxpayers’ dollars very seriously.  This week, the House took action to pass H.R. 5325, the Legislative Branch Appropriations Act for FY 2017. Congress must conduct proper oversight and eliminate all forms of reckless spending habits - especially for its own budget. One way the House has maintained its commitment to eliminating out of control spending is leading by example. This bill continues a pay freeze for all Members of Congress in addition to cutting the cost of the Legislative Branch in a fiscally responsible manner. Most importantly, this bill will protect constituent services that help ensure access to important benefits for federal employees, servicemen, veterans, and seniors.

In Nevada

As I travel across our state, I always enjoy listening to the thoughts, ideas and concerns of Nevadans and learning how I can best serve them. Here are some of the constituents I recently met with in Austin:

The Austin School

Thank you to the faculty and students at the Austin School for having me. I appreciated answering all of their great questions about the federal government and wish their graduating seniors the best of luck in their future endeavors.

Austin Ranger District Office

I also stopped by the Austin Ranger District Office to receive an update and discuss meaningful solutions to the challenges facing the west.
