This week our country mourned the loss of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Justice Scalia served admirably in our nation’s highest court for nearly three decades and he will go down in history as one of the strongest defenders of our Constitution. I have the deepest appreciation for Justice Scalia and his service and extend my sincerest condolences to the Scalia Family at this time.
In the Second District:
This week, the House was in recess and Members were home to hear from their constituents. Here are some of the Nevadans I met with:
Hispanic Breakfast Meeting
This week, I hosted a Hispanic breakfast meeting in Reno. These quarterly meetings are a great way to get folks across the community together with local leaders and business owners. We had the opportunity to discuss real solutions for moving forward on the critical issues affecting Nevada’s Hispanic community. I’m there to listen and to also identify how I can be most helpful at the federal level. In order to make progress on these issues, it’s important for us to work closely together on these matters. Thank you to everyone who came out.
Carson Board of Supervisors
I enjoyed addressing the Carson Board of Supervisors this week to discuss issues affecting Carson City and the importance of working for legislation that will help Nevada.
District Ranger of the U.S. Forest Service Carson City Ranger District
I met with the District Ranger of the U.S. Forest Service Carson City Ranger District this week to receive an update on projects affecting Nevada. We specifically discussed the bi-state sage hen habitat issue and healthy forest fuels management issues. These meetings are important in order to figure out the best practices for helping Nevada leverage its vast public lands, while preserving our unique landscape and way of life.
H-2A Meeting
Today, I attended a H-2A meeting in Reno to discuss the new Department of Labor (DOL) rules and special procedures for sheep herding through the H-2A immigration program – a program which is especially important to our rural communities. You may be interested to know that I am a cosponsor of legislation that will move the H-2A program from the DOL to the Department of Agriculture in order to better meet the unique labor needs of our farmers and agricultural businesses. I will continue to work for legislation that will extensively support the sheep herding industries of Nevada.
Looking Ahead:
Next week the House comes back into session and will consider H.R. 3624, the Fraudulent Joinder Prevention Act of 2015 and H.R. 2406, the SHARE Act.
