I recently attended the Law Enforcement Officers’ Appreciation Day in Carson to show support for our local law enforcement. While there, I had the opportunity to visit with Kevin and Alice Howell, the parents of Deputy Sheriff Carl Howell who tragically lost his life while responding to a call in August 2015. I had the privilege of honoring their son back in May at the Nevada Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial in Carson. Thank you to everyone who joined me in supporting the brave men and women who sacrifice each day on our behalf to keep our communities safe.

Nevada Meetings
Incline Village Board Relators Group
I met with the Incline Village Realtors this week to give them an update on the work I’m doing in Washington. This was also an opportunity for me to answer several important questions about the federal policies that affect Nevadans’ ability to buy, sell, and own real estate.
Kevin Wall - Live and Local
I joined talk radio host Kevin Wall on Live and Local this week to talk about a number of issues affecting Nevada and how Washington can help. One of those issues included the importance of following the legislative process in Washington to deliver effective solutions. Kevin and I discussed the President’s failed healthcare plan - which was not passed through regular order - and how it’s not working for people in Nevada who will soon be left with fewer choices due to the law’s damaging side effects. In order to deliver meaningful solutions to improve healthcare and other issues that are equally complex, Washington must begin having frank and honest discussions through regular order. If you weren’t able to catch this segment, be sure to follow me on Facebook and Twitter to tune in next time.
Rural Update
Long Canyon Ribbon Cutting
Newmont Mining Corporation recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for Long Canyon mine, located between Wells and West Wendover. Long Canyon will do great things for Elko County in terms of economic benefit and development. Nevada’s 230 active mines add billions of dollars to our State’s economy, increasing opportunities for hardworking Nevadans. In fact, Long Canyon is expected to create nearly 300 new jobs by the end of 2017.

Elko Ranching Groups Recognized for Excellent Stewardship
I’d also like to congratulate the Mori Family and Shoesole Resource Management Group of Elko for recently receiving National Rangeland Stewardship Awards for being excellent stewards of the land. Both ranching groups have been grazing permittees on public land for over 20 years, and an honor such as this recognizes their dedication to ensuring Nevada’s rangeland is properly managed. This is just another example of the good that can come from letting those who live closest to these lands manage them.
Rural Assistance
My rural representative Martin Paris is based out of my Elko District Office on Railroad Street. He assists Nevadans by putting them in contact with federal, state, and local agencies. As a life-long Nevadan, he understands the unique needs of our rural communities and is pleased to assist constituents in any way possible. Martin can be reached at: (775) 777-7705.
Serving Nevada
Constituent Success Story
Arturo Garzon, a district representative in my Reno office, recently helped a constituent obtain an approved passport after experiencing difficulty through the State Department. Unable to receive approval, this constituent reached out to my Reno office for assistance. Arturo helped by sending several copies of documents, on the constituent's behalf, to the National Passport Center, which indicated one final document would need to be sent in before the passport could be approved. After the constituent mailed in this final document, the passport was expeditiously approved that same day.
My staff and I work for you, the people of the Nevada's 2nd Congressional District. If you are ever having an issue similar to this, or another issue with a federal agency that requires immediate assistance, please give one of my offices a ring. My staff is happy to assist in any way possible.
In Case you Missed it
Nevada Native Nations Land Act Becomes Law
I'm proud to report that my bill to transfer more than 70,000 acres of Nevada Public Lands back into local control was signed into law yesterday by the President. In terms of passing lands bills, our delegation’s willingness to work together to get things done in Washington has allowed Nevada to enjoy unique success. I would once again like to extend my thanks to my Nevada colleagues in both the House and Senate who supported my efforts to get this across the finish line. Congratulations to Nevada’s original natives, you have been patient to say the least, and your resilience has paid off.
