Dear Friend,

I’ll be hosting a TRICARE Town Hall this month in Reno. Join me October 26, from 10 A.M. – 12 P.M., at the Washoe County Administration Complex. This meeting will serve as an opportunity for active duty Military and National Guardsmen to come out and discuss issues, offer suggestions, and address any concerns related to TRICARE. While TRICARE will be the focus, this still remains an open forum for people to come and discuss other day-to-day challenges they might be experiencing. I strongly encourage folks in the area to attend to learn more about the assistance my office can provide.

Nevada News

During the October District Work Period, I've had the opportunity to tour local facilities and visit with students, local businesses, and federal agencies. Below are a few of the Nevadans I’ve recently met with:

Carson Montessori School

It was great meeting with students and staff from Carson Montessori School this week. I was happy to answer their questions and share details about the work I do in Congress to better serve our community. I’m always proud to see young Nevadans engaged and eager to learn about our nation’s government. Thanks for hosting me!

Fall Bar Admission Ceremony

I also spoke with new attorneys at the Northern Nevada Fall Bar Admission Ceremony this week. I had the opportunity to discuss my experience working as an attorney, share some of the valuable advice I received along the way, and explain how I turned my passion for law, leadership, and community service into a profession. I congratulate each of these students on their recent achievement and wish them the best of luck as they embark on a new career in law.

Hispanic Breakfast Meeting

Last week, I hosted a quarterly Hispanic breakfast in Reno. We had a productive discussion about immigration issues, specifically those related to smaller ports of entry like the Reno-Tahoe Airport. You may be interested to know that I included an amendment in the FY 17 Homeland Security Appropriations bill that would help smaller ports of entry that are being neglected by Customs and Border Patrol. These improvements would streamline travel to better serve Nevada's Hispanic population. I’m glad to be back in Nevada for the district work period, raising up the concerns of known groups of people, and working closely together to deliver results.

Reno-Sparks Association of Realtors

While in Reno, I also met with the Reno-Sparks Association of Realtors to provide an update on the work I’m doing in Washington and discuss issues related to homeowners and realtors in Nevada.

Bently Heritage Distillery Tour

Finally, I wrapped up last week with a trip to the old flour mill in Minden – the future home of Bently Heritage Distillery. Once the largest operating mill in the area, Bently plans to restore the mill and its surrounding structures and turn them into a fully operational distillery. A special thanks to their wonderful staff for showing me around. I’m proud to see Nevada’s businesses of tomorrow restoring pieces of our cultural identity and sharing them with the community. Bently is expected to be up and operating by fall 2017.

Constituent Success Story

A constituent of mine invested his own time and resources to improve his home to qualify for a Federal Housing Authority (FHA) Home Loan. The loan was initially approved, but at the last minute, the FHA defaulted on the loan approval, meaning they would have left this constituent - a disabled Vietnam veteran - homeless.

When my office learned of the situation, Ken Brooke, a district representative in my Reno office, intervened on this constituent’s behalf. Ken worked with representatives from the FHA and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, cutting through red-tape to provide proper documentation of the improvements made to the property. With Ken’s assistance, the FHA decided to maintain its previous approval of the loan, and the case was completed within a few short weeks.

Nevadans deserve a government that works hard to get things done for the people it serves. I hope that you are encouraged by this success story, and will reach out to my staff and me whenever you need assistance. We work each day to provide information about available resources and to intervene on your behalf to deliver solutions. If you are ever having an issue with a federal agency and need immediate assistance, please give one of my offices a ring.

Cafe at Adele’s Named Finalist for Restauranteur of the Year

I’d like to once again give a shout out to Karen and Chef Charlie Abowd of the Cafe at Adele’s in Carson for qualifying as a finalist in the Nevada Restaurant Association's running for restauranteur of the year. They were the only finalist representing Northern Nevada, congrats! I’d also like to honor Chef Charlie’s mother, Adele, on receiving a lifetime achievement award that Chef Charlie accepted on her behalf. Proud to have you in the neighborhood!
