While traveling across Nevada during the April District Work Period, I had several opportunities to hear directly from constituents, local businesses, students, and federal agencies throughout CD-2. I enjoyed hearing from all of you and look forward to taking your thoughts and ideas back to Washington this week as I continue working on your behalf.
Below are some highlights from the work period:
Reno Town Hall
Thank you to everyone who attended the health care and immigration town hall in Reno. We had more than 600 Nevadans participate. I’m always proud to see our community come together for a thoughtful and productive discussion about the state of our nation. I would also like to extend my thanks to the staff at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center for making this meeting possible. If you were unable to attend this town hall, and are in need of assistance, I encourage you to contact my Reno office at 775-686-5760 or my Washington office at 202-225-6155. We’re happy to help.
Northern Nevada Healthcare Leadership Council
Big thanks to the folks at Northern Nevada Healthcare Leadership Council for meeting with me recently. We discussed a number of health care issues that are important to Nevadans. With health care being at the forefront of Congress’s agenda, I will be sure to keep Nevadan's concerns in mind as the House continues its work on this issue.
Reno High School 'We the People' Students
I had a wonderful time visiting with ‘We the People’ students at Reno High a few weeks ago. Thank you for all of the great questions. I’m always happy to meet with young Nevadans who are engaged in civics and eager to learn more about our nation’s government. Another big thanks to Richard Clark, the ‘We the People’ RHS advisor, for helping organize.
ACTIONN
I also had a productive meeting recently with members of ACTIONN, a community organization from Northern Nevada. We had the opportunity to discuss immigration issues and the work Congress is doing to reform our broken immigration system.
Codel with Rep. McCollum (MN-04)
While home, I also visited Rock Creek Ranch and the wild horse holding facility at Palomino Valley with Rep. Betty McCollum of Minnesota’s 4th Congressional District.
We visited Rock Creek Ranch to look at Sage Hen habitat enhancement. The ranch is a vast landscape of wild Nevada. There has also been a recent fire that burned many acres of the ranchland. This included a section of pasture that has since been replanted with a special seed mix in an effort to provide Sage Hen habitat. This visit allowed us to see first-hand how ranchers work positively in terms of both fire mitigation and habitat enhancement.
Rep. McCollum and I also had a productive site tour at the Palomino Valley Holding Facility. We specifically discussed the high costs associated with holding wild horses in short-term and long-term holding facilities in Nevada and throughout the West, and actions the BLM is taking to address this growing issue. Following the tour, we headed over to the Nevada BLM State Office to discuss this issue further, in addition to Sage Hen issues, with Nevada State BLM Director John Ruhs.
Northern Nevada Service Academy Information Day
Last Saturday, I hosted a Service Academy Information Day at UNR along with Senators Dean Heller (R-NV) and Catherine Cortez-Masto (D-NV). As an Army ROTC alumnus and the father of a veteran and Navy ROTC alumna, I value the educational opportunities provided by our armed forces to students who are interested in serving our nation. Thank you to everyone who came out. I always enjoy meeting with some of the best and brightest students the Silver State has to offer.
Washington Wrap-Up:
This week, the House is working on a spending measure to continue funding the federal government. Please know that my staff and I remain focused on any proposed legislation in the House and the impact it will have in Nevada. As is the case with any issue, I will continue to concentrate on the policy and not the politics while keeping your concerns in mind.
President Trump’s Tax Returns
In light of Tax Day last week, I wanted to take a second to share my thoughts on the President's tax returns. While I do not believe it’s Congress’s responsibility to require any American to publicly disclose their taxes, I do believe President Trump has a responsibility to be transparent with the people he serves. On February 25, 2016 at a primary debate in Houston, President Trump said he will release his tax returns once he’s no longer under audit – and I expect him to keep his word.
As always, thank you for subscribing to the Amodei Report. I look forward to continuing to keep you up to date on the issues you care about most.
