This week, President Trump released his Fiscal Year 2020 budget request. I’m sure you have questions and are looking for specifics about his policy objectives, so I wanted to share the proposal with you here.
In the coming weeks, the House Appropriations Committee will thoroughly examine the President’s budget. Since any changes in actual funding levels require congressional approval, it’s quite common for the President’s suggested funding levels to be modified throughout the appropriations process.
As budget hearings get underway, I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Appropriations Committee to determine appropriate levels of funding for the critical programs and agencies Americans rely on.

President Trump Signs Bipartisan Public Lands Bill
On Tuesday, President Trump signed the Natural Resources Management Act into law, legislation that ensures our nation’s public lands are managed in an economically and environmentally responsible way. I appreciate the bottom-up approach taken on this bill to ensure we reached a mutually beneficial outcome for all stakeholders. I’m also pleased that the majority of a bill I introduced in January, the Nevada Lands Bill Technical Corrections Act of 2019 (H.R. 253), is now public law. These measures will create long-term economic prosperity across our state and strengthen Nevada’s conservation efforts by responsibly amending land development and restoration projects in Storey and Lincoln Counties.
Nevada Delegation Introduces the Jobs, Not Waste Act
Last week, I joined the entire Nevada Delegation to introduce H.R. 1619, the Jobs, Not Waste Act, legislation that would repurpose Yucca Mountain for alternative job-creating projects. Since I was elected to Congress, I have always said I do not believe Yucca Mountain should be a simple dumping site for our nation’s nuclear waste. Additionally, if Congress is going to bring Yucca Mountain to the table, then it’s important we do everything possible to dictate the terms of any future repository under the best conditions for our state. I believe part of that is advancing policies – like those included in H.R. 1619 – that will prioritize research and economic development opportunities in Nevada. I look forward to continuing to work with my Nevada colleagues on this and other thoughtful approaches to the issue.

Service Academy Information Day
REMINDER: High school students interested in attending one of our nation’s five U.S. Service Academies are encouraged to attend Service Academy Information Day tomorrow, Saturday, March 16 in Reno. The event will be held inside the Joe Crowley Student Union Building, Ballroom A, located on the University of Nevada, Reno’s (UNR) campus. Service Academy Information Day is a critical resource for students interested in obtaining a military education, as they will have an opportunity to speak with Service Academy representatives about the application and nomination processes.
As an Army ROTC alumnus and the father of a veteran and Navy ROTC alumna, I very much value the educational opportunities provided by our nation’s armed forces to students who are interested in serving their country. I strongly encourage students seeking a nomination to one of our nation’s Service Academies to attend Saturday’s event to learn more.

March District Work Period
Next week, I’ll be home in Nevada for the March district work period. While I’m home, I plan to make stops in Reno, Winnemucca, and Carson to meet with constituents and local leaders. Some of these meetings will include visits with Winnemucca Mayor Richard Stone, several BLM district managers and the state director, the Nevada Health and Human Services department, the Nevada Broadcasters Association, and the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Development State Director. Finally, I’ll be stopping by a Reno elementary school to read to third grade students.
While I’m home for the district work period, my mission is to ensure I’m doing everything possible to take care of the home front by conducting vigorous oversight and making sure I’m up to speed on any important projects and developments. I do this by working closely with the state and local agencies that are on the ground in Nevada and serve as a valued partner in protecting the multiple use and health of our rangelands.
