Amodei Report: Washington Edition

Dear Friend,

Our nation recently gathered to celebrate the peaceful transition of power from one president to the next. This change of Administrations is an exciting moment and a clear shift from what Congress has been working on for the last eight years. In my opinion, the tone for a new administration is set during its first 100 days in office. I’m pleased to see President Trump already taking action to deliver results by cutting down on federal regulations and working to enhance our refugee screening process though his recent executive order. This order builds off existing law to provide the Department of Homeland Security with the additional time needed to integrate effective protocols for immigrant visa screenings.

My office recently took the time to gather the facts on President Trump’s immigration executive order, and determine what it means for Nevada. We will continue to monitor the issue. If people need help – we’re here to assist.

Washington Wrap-Up:

Excessive regulations are making it harder for our economy to grow, for jobs to be created, and for people to achieve economic security. This week, the House worked to rein in burdensome rules and regulations that are hurting key drivers of our economy, like small businesses. We also passed several measures that collectively, will enhance national security efforts in Nevada. Below are some highlights:

Increasing American Competitiveness

American businesses continue to suffer from restrictive regulations imposed by the Obama Administration. As the House continues to fight back to return power to the people, we utilized the Congressional Review Act this week to repeal the Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) disclosure rule which is expected to cost Americans over a billion dollars and put good-paying jobs at risk. Congress must protect Americans from reckless bureaucrats and keep the government accountable, and I will continue supporting efforts to do so.

Benefiting Hardworking Taxpayers

After losing 68,000 coal mining jobs during the Obama Administration, Congress worked this week to prevent further loss by overturning the Stream Protection Rule – a 1,640 page rule created with input from only 3 percent of our nation’s coal mines. Overturning this rule will benefit hardworking taxpayers across the country.

Fostering a Common Sense Regulatory Environment

The House also took action to overturn the Department of Interior’s Methane Venting and Flaring rule – a rule in search of a problem. Overturning this rule will reduce duplicative regulatory burdens and encourage innovation, creating a common sense regulatory environment that benefits taxpayers.

President Trump's Executive Action on Regulations

This week, President Trump took executive action that will require federal agencies to revoke two regulations for every new regulation issued. This order builds off the REINS act, a bipartisan bill the House passed earlier this month with my support. I’m pleased to see the President take immediate action to hold our federal agencies accountable. I will continue to support measures that create opportunities for the American people, instead of hindering them.

Enhancing State Security Measures

The House passed H.R. 58, H.R. 584, and H.R. 437 this week, bills which strengthen terrorism prevention and emergency preparedness. Specifically, H.R. 437, the Medical Preparedness Allowable Use Act, enhances medical capabilities and preparedness under the Urban Area Security Initiative, used to provide funding for terrorism prevention and response programs and infrastructure. Together, these bills will make security a state priority and ensure designated high-value target urban areas, like Las Vegas, have the tools they need. I look forward to meeting with the Las Vegas Metro Police Department next week in Washington to learn more about how these measures will benefit law enforcement officers and Nevadans.

In Case You Missed It:

Drawing Back the Most Damaging Parts of Obamacare

Nevadans have experienced the devastating side effects of Obamacare firsthand, with 10 counties across our state having only one insurance provider to choose from this year. Obamacare has failed – and it’s only getting worse. This is why the House took swift action last week to provide relief to the millions suffering under this disastrous law. S.Con.Res.3 paves the way for a smooth and stable transition as Congress works to replace Obamacare with patient-centered reforms that will increase people’s access to quality care at a lower cost. As we continue moving forward, the House has begun scheduling preliminary hearings to discuss repairs to our broken healthcare system. Rest assured – no one will have the rug pulled out from under them as Congress works to give the American people the care they deserve.

Providing Relief to Nevadans

One main problem with Obamacare that is specific to rural areas is the issue of reduced coverage and increased costs. As mentioned above, residents in 10 counties throughout Nevada, seven of which are located in CD-2, only have one insurance provider to choose from. Not only has Obamacare left these Nevadans with no alternative, but it adds insult to injury by inflicting a penalty on residents who do not purchase the coverage Washington says is right for them. The Protection from Insurance Exchange Monopolies Act (H.R. 521), a bill I recently reintroduced, will provide much-needed relief by exempting residents who live in a county with less than two providers from this unfair tax. As Congress continues to discuss the many facets related to healthcare, I hope this bill will be included in any healthcare reform package eventually adopted in Congress. In any event, we’re shining the spotlight on one of the most damaging parts of this failed law. I expect Members from other rural districts across the nation to join me in this important effort to increase Americans’ access to quality and affordable care.

Working to Create Jobs in Rural Nevada

I also recently took action to streamline the mining permitting process in a way that will allow us to effectively use critical minerals while increasing job growth. The National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act (H.R. 520) will bring transparency to the permitting process without changing any environmental regulations, protections, or opportunity for public input. This common-sense bill will create good-paying jobs and revenue for local, often rural, communities, while paying respect to economic, national security, and environmental concerns.

Serving Nevada

Winnemucca Veterans’ Town Hall

I’ll be hosting a veterans’ town hall meeting in Winnemucca on Friday, February 10, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., inside the Meeting Room of the Humboldt County Library located at 85 East Fifth Street.

This veterans’ town hall will serve as an opportunity for veterans to come out and discuss challenges, offer suggestions, and address their concerns – free of any agenda. In addition to thanking them for their service, this will also be an opportunity for veterans to speak with representatives from the VA Regional Office and the Veterans’ Health Administration, and learn more about the assistance my office can provide. If you’re a veteran in the area, please come out and let’s see how we can best serve you.
