WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Mark Amodei (NV-02) today released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced the Washoe Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) will receive a $23 million Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant.

“I applaud President Trump and Secretary Chao for continuing to make Nevada a priority and securing funding for this much-needed project,” said Rep. Amodei. “Today’s funding announcement builds upon numerous other successes Washoe RTC has achieved in CD-2 and will provide the Commission with the additional resources it needs to make further improvements to our transportation systems. This investment will ultimately help enable Nevadans to move as safely and efficiently as possible and I thank the Trump Administration for its continued support.”

“This Administration is making significant investments in infrastructure, and this $1 billion in BUILD grants will repair, rebuild, and revitalize transportation systems across America,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao.

Background:

On May 19, 2020, Congressman Amodei sent a letter to USDOT Secretary Elaine L. Chao expressing support for Washoe RTC’s application for a Fiscal Year 2020 BUILD grant for its Pyramid Highway Project. Today, USDOT announced $1 billion in BUILD grants, with Washoe RTC receiving a $23 million BUILD Grant from that allocation to improve and widen approximately 2.4 miles of Pyramid Highway by widening approximately 1.6 miles from Queen Way to Los Altos Parkway from four-lanes to six-lanes, and reconstructing approximately 0.75 miles of existing four-lane roadway from Los Altos Parkway to Golden View Drive. It also includes installation of smart traffic signals, widening the median, shoulders, bike lanes, and sidewalks, and installation of enhanced drainage and storm water infrastructure.

This grant announcement builds off numerous other successes including last month’s announcement of a $4,080,000 DOT grant for Washoe RTC to upgrade its public bus fleet and an October 2019 Federal Transit Administration (FTA) award of a $40.4 million Capital Investment Grant (CIG) to fund Washoe RTC’s Virginia Street Bus RAPID Transit (BRT) Extension project in Reno.
