About The District

Nevada’s Second Congressional District includes the majority of Lyon County, the state capital Carson City, and all of Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Eureka, Humboldt, Lander, Pershing, Storey, and Washoe counties. Located in Washoe County, Reno is CD-2’s largest city and the state’s third largest city next to Las Vegas and Henderson, Nev.

CD-2 is home to the University of Nevada, Reno, several state historic parks, and one of the most spectacular bodies of water in the United States – Lake Tahoe. Geologically, NV-2 is one of the most unique places on earth. It's rich in minerals such as copper, barite, molybdenum, clay, silica and lithium.

While Nevada is known as the Silver State, CD-2 mines nearly 80% of all the gold in the United States, making it the fourth largest gold producer in the world. CD-2 has a long history of mineral and metal mining dating back to the 1850's, and while the mining industry has seen significant changes over the years, its role as an important contributor to the District’s economy has remained constant. In fact, nearly 11,000 Nevadans are directly employed by the mining industry, predominantly in Northern Nevada. That number jumps to 28,000 when you consider indirect jobs.

As the industry continues to grow, cutting edge technology has made mining cleaner, safer, and more environmentally responsible, with CD-2 being a world-leader in this area.
